Degree Requirements at the College of DuPage

The College of DuPage, or COD, is located in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. It is the second largest college in the state. The school, which offers associate occupational degrees and certificate programs, serves about 31,000 students each semester. Students must meet not only general education requirements for an associate's degree, but must also complete specific courses and electives for the program pursued.
  1. Degrees Offered

    • COD offers nine degrees including an Associate in Fine Arts Art Option, Associate in Arts, Associate in Arts in Teaching Early Childhood Education, Associate in Fine Arts Music Option, Associate in Arts in Teaching Secondary Mathematics, Associate in Science, Associate in Applied Science, Associate in General Studies and Associate in Engineering Science. Occupational programs offered at COD include such concentrations as Computer Information Systems, Accounting, Paralegal Studies, Interior Design, Horticulture, Physical Therapist Assistant, Practical Nursing and Diagnostic Medical Imaging Radiography.

    General Education Requirements

    • COD students must complete 18 credit hours within a General Education core group of classes. Three to five credit hours must be completed within Mathematics. Three credit hours of coursework must be completed in Social and Behavioral Sciences and includes classes such as Political Science, Psychology and Geography. Three to five credit hours are required in the study of Physical and Life Sciences and includes such classes such as Biology, Botany and Physics. Six credit hours are required in Communications classes. Three credit hours are required within the Humanities and Fine Arts.

    Graduation Requirements

    • To graduate, each student must have at least a C average in a combined grade point in courses numbered 1000 or higher. For each degree, a student must also have completed a minimum of 64 semester credit hours in courses numbered 1000 or higher. A student must have met the credit hour requirements for their specific concentration. Students cannot take more than four semester credits in Physical Education classes and cannot apply more than 42 semester hours of credit from Advanced Placement exams.

    Specific Degrees

    • To fulfill requirements within a major, a student must complete 20 credit hours of specific courses. Twenty six credit hours of electives must also be completed within the student's area of study. Among the courses offered to complete an Occupational Accounting degree are Bookkeeping, Financial Accounting and Cost Accounting. For a Biology major, courses offered include Environmental Biology, Principles of Biological Science and Ecology. To work toward a Nursing major, courses include Neuropsychiatric Nursing, Pharmacotherapeutics and Clinical Decision Making. The Real Estate concentration offers courses such as Brokerage Administration, Real Estate Transactions and Property Management.
