Begin looking for a degree program and major by looking at your interests. You probably have quite a few. The best major for you is going to be something that you find interesting. If you are bored by law, don't pursue a law degree. If you are bored with accounting, don't try to get your CPA. Remember, you'll be studying this for quite some time, and probably working at it even longer. Don't choose a major based on the money you think you'll make or on what your roommate is doing. Choose one based on your interests.
What you are good at is different from what interests you, but you must also consider this before you decide what the "best" degree by major is for you. Even if you love animals, if you are not good at working with them or are not good at dealing with blood, don't become a veterinarian. If you are interested in machinery, but you aren't good at the mathematics and scientific ideas behind machinery, getting that type of degree isn't best for you. After you've made a list of your interests, go back through that list and cross off anything that you know you aren't good at. You'll be closer to figuring out what your major and degree should be.
Choose a degree program based on your ability to undergo the necessary training. You know your level of education and how much work you are willing to put into a program. If you know you can't take more than a couple of years of school, pick a degree that is fast and easy, like an associate degree in administration or a massage therapy degree that takes only two years. Medical school and law school are for those who are prepared to deal with many years of study, and strenuous study at that. Your best degree program will be a major that you know you can complete.
Examine the career choices for each degree before you choose a major. If you study education you're going to be working in the education field, so if you don't want to teach don't declare that major. It may seem obvious, but the best major for you is the one that will lead to a job that you love, and the job you will love is different from what anyone else will love. Focus on what you want to do after college. Choosing a job that you can be happy in right away means you won't waste time getting a degree you can't use. Some degree majors like business or social justice can lead you to dozens of different careers, so if you are unsure of your exact goal but know the area in which you want to work, choose one of these. On the other hand, studying to become an electrician can lead only to one job, so don't choose that one unless you want to become an electrician.
