How to Footnote an Essay

Adding footnotes to your essay allows you to verify your resources every time you state a fact in a research paper. Sometimes, footnotes can take the place of the Works Cited page that is normally reserved for the end of your essay. Adding footnotes to your essay also depends on what type of writing format you are using. Modern Language Association (MLA) style footnotes are different from American Psychological Association (APA) style footnotes, so ask your teacher which style she is looking for before you start writing.

Instructions

  1. MLA Style

    • 1

Number the facts to which you wish to add footnotes, using superscript numbers.

    • 2

Start your footnotes section four lines below the end of your text.

    • 3

Indent the first line of the footnote a half-inch or by pressing the "Tab" key once. Add the corresponding superscript number to the line and place a single space between the superscript and the author's first name.

    • 4

Format book resources like this using single space: Author's first name last name, Book Title underlined (Place of Publication: Publisher, year published) page number referenced.

    • 5

Repeat the process for each footnote.

    APA Style

    • 6

Add a superscript number to the part of your text you wish to footnote.

    • 7

Determine whether the footnote is a copyright or content footnote. Copyright footnotes are needed to reprint a quote or statement longer than 500 words. Content footnotes are used to explain or add to information stated in the text that would otherwise distract from the paper's thesis if it were included in the actual text.

    • 8

Add the footnotes regardless of type to the bottom of your page. Indent five spaces from the margin on the first line of each footnote.

    • 9

Include additional information pertinent to the topic footnoted only and keep the explanation brief for content footnotes. Suggest a book for further reading or bring attention to a particular section of a resource that highlights the information. For copyright footnotes, you must first receive permission from the author quoted before using the quote. Then, write the word "Note" in italics with an ending period. Then write: From "Title of the article," by the author, date published, journal or magazine title, number of publication, page referenced, copyright date and copyright holder. Reprinted with permission.

    • 10

Add the footnoted references to your "Works Cited" section at the end of your paper. Attach any letters of written permission obtained for using copyright footnotes to the very end of your paper.
