How to Get to Know Strangers in Classrooms

Being a stranger in a classroom can be difficult. While many teachers try to engage students to get to know one another, many adult classes skip this step. If you are tired of being a stranger in a classroom, there are steps you can take to get to know your classmates. Start with one friend-finding method and go from there to make your circle of friends even wider and stronger.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce yourself to new students or members of the class. Don't be afraid to talk to strangers in a classroom. Everyone is there for the same purpose and likely has a common interest with someone else. Tell the new people your name and a few interesting things about yourself.

    • 2

Engage new people in conversations or activities, such as group discussions or projects. Invite the new people to join your group. If you are the new person, ask to join someone else's group.

    • 3

Invite the other class members out after class for a snack or treat. This will encourage bonding between classmates and may make classmates friendlier toward one another.

    • 4

Ask to play a few simple icebreaker games during or directly before class time. Play games such as "Similar or Different." In this game, different statements, such as "I am athletic," are written onto strips of paper. The students then discuss how they are similar to or different from that statement. This game works best in groups of four or fewer people.

    • 5

Invite other classmates to study with you before or after class. This will allow you to interact with strangers and also might help improve the grades of everyone in the study group.
