Take career-prep assessment tests if you need help deciding on your goals before going back to school. If not, skip to Step 2. These tests are available through many colleges and online, and will help you learn about careers that fit your interests and skills. After taking assessment courses, research the degrees and training needed to land a job in the field you're interested in.
Determine the degree or certificate you wish to obtain and the school you wish to attend. Select your program and school based on your location, the degree you want, and the amount of money you have available to spend on your education. Also, be sure to select a college or university that holds classes that fit into your schedule, especially if you already have a full-time job.
Apply to the college or university you wish to attend. If needed, consult with an admissions adviser for help, especially if you cannot obtain records needed.
Meet with an adviser who works with other students in your program to determine a plan to complete the degree you want in the quickest amount of time possible. Advisers can help you learn about class requirements and course scheduling. Establish a plan for your education by deciding which classes you will take each semester and set goals for each semester.
Enroll in classes for your first semester. You may need to successfully take placement tests for subjects like math and English. Consult with your adviser if you have questions about the tests.
Meet with professors during their office hours for extra guidance if needed during your first classes back to school. Consult your adviser if you need to obtain additional tutoring, resources, or other assistance during your education.
