How to Go Green on College Campuses

College provides a new opportunity for young adults to make positive changes in their lifestyles. Deciding to "go green" on campus will not only benefit the environment, but can also help students living on their own for the first time learn to lead a healthier, economical way of life. In preparation for the upcoming years at university, they can make thoughtful decisions that promote energy-efficient living. A student's efforts are often rewarded with a clean and vibrant learning environment.

Buy used and recycled products to bring with you to college. While you may need a few new items to prepare for your university years, try to limit the amount of new products that you buy. Conduct searches using sources such as the Internet sites Craigslist and eBay to help you find second-hand textbooks and furniture. You will end up saving money as you help the environment. Check to make sure the new paper products you do buy, such as notebooks and notecards, are made from recycled materials.

Limit your use of electricity. If you are living in a dorm, try to use the kitchen services whenever possible instead of microwaving. Purchase a laptop which is more energy efficient than a desktop computer.

Research alternative methods of transportation to get to class. Most campuses allow for only short distances between classes, making it possible for many students to simply ride a bike or walk to class. If you live off campus or have a greater distance to cover, use public transport or set up a carpool with classmates whenever possible.

Join an environmental organization on campus to help others learn how to "go green." If your campus has no such organization, start a group of your own and promote environmental awareness.
