How to Start a Go Green Campaign at My College

Environmental awareness is important in large organizations like colleges, which have a large ecological footprint. Both directly, by using large amounts of electricity to power facilities, and indirectly, with professors, students and staff driving to campus, colleges create an environmental impact. Plenty of reasons exist to campaign for a green lifestyle at college. As with any campaign, focus your arguments and communication techniques on your target audience: students, staff and faculty.

Instructions

    • 1

List all actions taking place at the college that affect the environment. Next to each, write your proposal for how to address the problem. For example, if one issue is emissions from staff and students' cars, you could propose establishing a college bus service.

    • 2

Compose a manifesto, using the ideas on the list. Make it concise so that busy students and staff members can read it easily. Bullet points are the best choice. Give a catchy name to your campaign, such as "Purdue Goes Green."

    • 3

Create a blog and a page on social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, and upload your "going green" declaration. Include contact details, such as your email address, so that everyone who is interested can join your campaign. Update your blog with every new action or publications of your awareness campaign.

    • 4

Make small awareness leaflets on half-letter-size papers and distribute them to students. Include two or three problems and proposals, along with contact details and your blog address for more information. The purpose of the leaflet is to ensure that students are aware of your campaign and interested individuals know how to reach you.

    • 5

Use online student forums and traditional bulletin boards on campus to raise awareness of your issue. Talk to your friends about your environmental campaign and ask them to spread the word.

    • 6

Format your campaign's declaration in a formal letter and send it to the college's administration. College administrators are responsible for maintaining the campus and therefore for implementing proposals like installing solar panels on campus buildings.

    • 7

Organize meetings with students interested in the environment. Print paper invitations to distribute to students, post the time and place on your blog and student forums, and create a legal-size poster to place on bulletin boards. Meetings enable you to meet like-minded students and broaden your campaign's activities.

    • 8

Arrange activities, such as tree planting on the campus or in the community and collecting soft drink cans for recycling. Such activities can help you spread the "go green" word more effectively.
