Read all the material about the college entrance essay that was provided in the application packet from the college to which you are applying. Search the college's website for information about what to include in an essay. Some colleges require a particular type of essay; for example, an essay about a person who has made an impact in your life or an essay about some hardship you have overcome. Know what the college expects from your essay, and keep those expectations in mind as you write.
Write an outline for your essay. Select a topic that fits the essay guidelines and decide what information you want to include. Choose no more than 3 main points, plus a brief introduction and conclusion. Include new information about yourself in your essay -- information that is not already included in your admission application or transcript.
Write several attention-getting opening sentences and decide which one is best. If your essay tells a dramatic story of overcoming hardships, write an opening sentence that describes a turning point in your story. If your essay is a lighthearted anecdote about your family, write an opening sentence that makes the reader laugh. Ask a question that your essay answers or disclose a surprising fact about yourself.
