The first step is to apply through the Tertiary Admissions Center in the state in which you would like to attend university. Depending on the school, the prospective student may also need to submit scores for tests such as the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test or the Special Tertiary Admissions Test.
Students outside of Australia must apply using an International Student Application. Additional test scores must be submitted if required by the program. If accepted, students must contact the immigration office and send a copy of their confirmation letters in order to obtain their student visas.
All students are required to demonstrate proficiency in English. Students who completed their high school education in Australia are exempt from testing. Foreign students are required take and pass one of several exams. The International English Language Testing System and the Test of English as a Foreign Language are the two most common English tests.
Students who are Australian citizens already have Medicare. International students are required to obtain Overseas Student Health Cover before issuance of a student visa and being allowed to study in Australia.
Some universities in Australia require prerequisite courses prior to admission. Also, if you are applying to a graduate program, experience may be required before you can be fully allowed into the program.
