Liberal Studies Requirements

The liberal arts educational model originated from ancient Greek traditions. Learning about the world and how to learn is the basis for a strong liberal arts degree.
  1. History

    • The required credit hours of history (often about six) may include World War I history, ancient Asian history, the history of Latin America or American history.

    Fine Arts

    • Typically, you must take three credit hours of fine arts. These may include art, art perspective, art history or modern art.

    Diverse Perspectives

    • Generally, schools require six credits of historical or diverse perspectives, which may include a general location or diversity group.

    Natural Sciences

    • An estimated six required credit hours of natural sciences may include biology, chemistry, anthropology or physics.

    Quantitative Methods

    • You may need six credit hours of quantitative methods, which can include logic or mathematics, such as geometry, algebra, calculus or precalculus.

    Language or Literature

    • For a liberal arts degree, you usually need six to 12 credit hours of language or literature. This may include language composition, major historical works or literature writing.
