How to Use Effective Adaptation to Continue in College

College life brings a new set of challenges for students, especially those living away from home for the first time. They are under an entire new set of pressures to do well at school, including earning good grades. The pressure can come from the fact that college needs to be paid for, not coming "free" like high school. There are also challenges for being away from family and surviving without the support structure that had been built up during high school. But successful college students learn how to adapt to college life, and this ability to use adaptation techniques will continue to serve them well beyond their school years.

Start a new journal in a notebook. Write in your journal daily to help you process all of the new information that you're learning. College isn't just about adapting to a higher level of coursework. It also includes being introduced to an entire new social structure, one that is more closely aligned with the adult world than high school.

    • 2

Try new lifestyle patterns to fit in with new demands on your time and efforts. For example, you may decide college life suggests you should spend a few hours each evening socializing with people from your dorm. Or you may try new study hours and get a part-time job. Tailor your lifestyle changes to make your social life and your school work more successful.

    • 3

Read through your journal periodically. College life often brings rapid changes, and you may forget about some of the lifestyle adaptations or changes that you've included in your daily routine. By periodically reading about your efforts, you can more easily identify the ones that worked and the problems that these changes have resolved. This helps you to identify the adaptions that are effective.

Give it time. Adapting to the changes that college brings-many of them major changes-can take time for someone to develop a comfort level. At times nothing may seem to work out, but this could be an anxiety attack resulting from being away from home. Try new things and give it some time.
