How to Get Into College After Getting a GED

Now that you earned your GED, you're thinking about ways to start a new career that's both financially stable and suits your talents and interests. One way to do this is by attending college. You don't always have to enroll at a four-year university to get career training because many local two-year community colleges offer associate's degrees in various practical occupations such as plumbing, cosmetology, welding, carpentry and paralegal studies.

Research the universities you're interested in. If you want to attend Howard University, visit their website and click on links such as "About Us," "Academic Programs" and "Degree Requirements." Also seek out information on the school's tuition costs per semester as well as financial aid packages that the school offers.

    • 2

Apply for financial aid. Visit the Department of Education's website and fill out a Federal Application for Free Student Aid (FAFSA). Be sure to get a PIN when applying so you can finish the application at a later time if you can't complete it in one session. Have documents such as income tax returns on hand when applying. Also talk with your career counselor about any scholarships that are available and how you can apply.

    • 3

Gather any additional paperwork that you'll need to send with your college application. If the university requires you to submit a statement of purpose, write and revise this essay at least three weeks before the deadline. Also arrange to have a copy of your GED certificate mailed to you so you can send it with other application materials.
