How to Calculate Semester Hours for Military Training

Military training prepares uniformed service members for a diverse number of tasks through intensive education in numerous disciplines. Service members further hone their knowledge and ability through time served and military experience. Discharged service members often lose credit for military training and experience when pursuing an academic degree through a college or university. The American Council on Education (ACE) performs reviews of military occupations and training programs to help former servicemen and women transition from soldier to student and receive credit for the valuable knowledge gained during duty.

Review ACE recommendations for credit allotments. Credits are counted on a semester hour basis. Typically, a semester credit hour is determined by the total number of instruction hours per week rounded up. For example, colleges consider a class that meets twice a week for one hour 20 minutes each session to be a three-credit course.

Consult the transfer coordinator at your college for your college's specific transfer policy. Each college or university determines its own policy for accepting credits. ACE recommendations inform and advise credit evaluators, but ACE cannot enforce its recommendations. Consider other schools if your choice does not accept military training credits. Over 2,300 colleges and universities recognize ACE credit evaluations.

Request an ACE-endorsed transcript. The Army and Navy, including the Marine Corps, provide registry transcript services for all service members. Army/American Council on Education Registry Transcript System (AARTS) maintains a database of over four million soldier records and can issue official transcripts within two business days of request. The Air Force and Coast Guard have transcript service centers that can provide transcripts upon request as well.
