Certain English courses are required for graduation. These are the basic levels of English that are the prerequisites for entry into colleges. The first course is English 9. This is the entry course that begins to build on the student's vocabulary. The following courses are 10, 11 and 12. Each becomes increasingly more difficult, teaching American and English literature, as well as reading and writing skills.
The math requirements in Alabama are the same across the United States. All students must pass geometry, algebra, algebra II, trigonometry and calculus. These are the basics of math required in most college entrance exams. Calculus is one of the more difficult subjects to complete.
High school science courses teach the student theories in reality and the world around them. Most colleges require chemistry, physics and biology for their application acceptance. The more prestigious colleges require advanced physics, advanced chemistry and advanced biology before applications are considered.
Most electives are the classes that lead the student toward their passions. They consist of physical education, sports and foreign languages. They also include the arts. Classes such as drama, studio art and music are also included in this category. Each student must complete six credits from this category to graduate.
