California State High School Graduation Requirements

Students planning to graduate from a California high school can find out about graduation requirements early-on. Knowing about the specific courses and tests beforehand will help you to plan each of your semesters wisely.
  1. Required Courses

    • There are specific high school courses required to help you on your way to admissions into a California State college. They include: Two years of physical education, three years of English, two years of math including Algebra 1 and three years of history or social science (including one year of U.S. geography and history), one year of world history, culture and geography, and one semester each of economics and American government.

Additionally, one year each of physical science and biological science will cover the two-year science requirement. You will also need one year of a foreign language or visual or performing art.

California High School Exit Examination (CHSEE)

    • The state of California enacted a law making the class of 2006 the first public high school graduating class required to pass the CHSEE in order to graduate and receive a diploma. Beginning in their sophomore year, students are able to take this two-part examination which includes English/language arts and mathematics. Students with disabilities are exempt from meeting this requirement until alternative means are implemented.

    Passing Grades And Test Scores

    • Students are required to pass each course with the minimum of a "D" grade to graduate, and each part of the CHSEE exam must be passed with a minimum score of 350. Students can take each part of the test during different semesters if they choose to, and students who are learning English are permitted to take the test with the necessary variations.
