Obtaining an OSSD requires the successful completion of 18 compulsory credits. The credit requirements are as follows: four credits in English, three credits in mathematics, two credits in science, one credit in history, one credit in geography, one credit in the arts, one credit in health and physical education, one credit in French, 0.5 credit in career studies, 0.5 credit in civics.
Completion of 15 additional optional credits is further required. 12 of 15 optional credits are entirely optional, based on student choice. The remaining three optional credits are chosen from an additional credit in English, or languages, social sciences and humanities, or guidance and career education, or alternatively, cooperative education. Next, an option from either physical education, art, business or French and also cooperative education. Third option being from either science, computers and technology, French and also cooperative education.
Successful completion of the provincial literacy test is also required to graduate from an Ontario high school. Administered to grade 10 students, the test is graded on a pass/fail ratio. The literacy test may be repeated if not successfully completed.
Participation in a minimum of 40 hours of community service is the final requirement to obtain an OSSD. Completed throughout the high school career, volunteer service must be endorsed by a supervisor and verified by the school's administration.
