Very few universities offer a doctoral degree in the fine arts. Inside Higher Ed notes that Ohio University, Texas Tech University and the University of California, San Diego are the only universities currently offering a doctorate in the visual or performing arts. The University of Georgia also has a doctoral program in visual and performing arts. While many universities, both public and private, offer doctoral programs in English, few of them have a terminal degree in creative writing, according to Poets and Writers magazine; the schools that do include Cornell University, Florida State University, Ohio University, Oklahoma State University, the University of Georgia, the University of Missouri and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
U.S. News & World Report ranks graduate schools in science. For biology doctorates, students can go to Stanford, the University of Missouri, St. Louis, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology or Duke University. The California Institute of Technology, the University of Illinois, the University of Texas and Columbia University all are highly ranked for chemistry. Carnegie Mellon University, the University of California, Berkeley, Georgia Tech and the University of Wisconsin scored very highly in computer science rankings. Ranked highly for earth science are Penn State, the University of Arizona, the University of Colorado, the University of Chicago and Brown University. In physics, Princeton University, the University of California, San Diego, the University of Maryland and the University of Michigan all ranked well for doctoral studies.
Many adults, after graduating in law, medicine, business or education, decide to get a doctoral degree to complement their professional degree. U.S. News & World Report rates the University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University, the University of Virginia and the University of California, Los Angeles as competitive business schools. For law, Yale University, the University of Michigan, Vanderbilt University and the University of Southern California all rank in the top 20. Columbia University, Vanderbilt University, the University of Oregon and Ohio State University are all good schools from which to obtain a doctorate in education. Johns Hopkins University, the University of California, San Francisco, the University of Washington, Baylor University and Case Western Reserve University all rated highly for students interested in pursuing a doctorate in medicine.
There are many types of doctorates within the social sciences. For a degree in psychology, the University of Minnesota, the University of North Carolina, Cornell University and the University of California, Davis are highly ranked in U.S. News & World Report. In economics Harvard University, the University of Rochester, Stanford University and the University of Chicago are included among the top 20 schools. Rutgers University, the University of Indiana, Emory University and the University of California, Irvine present good choices for a doctoral degree in history. In political science New York University, Texas A&M University, the University of Iowa and the University of California Berkeley rank within the top 30 according to U.S. News & World Report.
