Universities for Primary Teaching Degrees

"Primary education" is the term for elementary school in Britain and its former territories. Primary teaching degrees are designed to prepare prospective teachers to thrive in a primary school setting. Most primary teaching degrees give prospective teachers qualified teaching status. While most will prepare individuals to teach all ages of primary students, some schools offer specializations in particular age groups.
  1. Roehampton University

    • Located in London, Roehampton University offers a Bachelor's of Education degree in Primary Teaching. Prospective teachers at Roehampton University will be qualified to teach both Key Stage 1 students (children ages three to seven years old) and Key Stage 2 students (children ages seven to eleven years old). Prospective teachers at Roehampton will have the chance to specialize in teaching either Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2 students. The university claims that 96 percent of its graduates are able to get teaching jobs within six months of graduation.

    University of Gloucestershire

    • Located in Cheltenham, the University of Gloucestershire offers a Bachelor's of Education degree in Primary Teaching. The university focuses on working with primary students and on preparing prospective teachers for work in specialized primary schools, such as religious schools or schools where teachers are required to speak a second language. Prospective teachers at the University of Gloucestershire are paired with tutors who will assist with academics. Graduates of the University of Gloucestershire will receive qualified teacher status.

    Bishop Grosseteste University

    • Located in Lincoln, Bishop Grosseteste University offers an honors Bachelor of Arts in Primary Education. The degree is completed in three years, and prospective teachers that graduate will receive qualified teacher status. Prospective teachers will be able to teach all ages of primary students, but will specialize in two primary school age ranges. Students will go through the school in groups and interact with each other through group meetings, group seminars and virtual message boards.

    The University of Winchester

    • Located in Winchester, the University of Winchester offers an honors Bachelor of Arts in Primary Education. Prospective teachers will complete their degrees in three or four years depending on whether or not the university deems a prospective teacher academically fit enough to complete the degree in three years. The university prepares prospective teachers to teach both Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2 students. Prospective teachers hoping to attend the school must complete an interview with the school and a short writing section.
