Benjamin Franklin founded the University of Pennsylvania in 1740. As of 2009, the school had about 10,300 graduate students. The university contains 12 schools, including schools for communication, education, law, arts and sciences, dental medicine, design, engineering, medicine, nursing, social policy, veterinary medicine and business. Together these schools grant Ph.D. degrees in more than 70 fields. The Wharton School of Business, ranked 5th among business schools by U.S. News & World Report, grants Ph.D. degrees in nine different fields. The University of Pennsylvania has many other high-ranking graduate programs, including its programs in English, economics and history, which ranked fourth, ninth and ninth, respectively in U.S. News & World Report. The same magazine also ranked the University of Pennsylvania among the top 20 graduate schools in sociology, math, physics and biological sciences.

Andrew Carnegie founded Carnegie Mellon University in 1900, and, as of 2009, the school had about 5,400 graduate students. The university contains seven colleges and schools, including the Institute of Technology, the Colleges of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and Science, the Tepper School of Business, the Heinz College and the School of Computer Science. The Tepper School of Business grants doctoral degrees in eight fields of study, including accounting, economics, financial economics, information systems, marketing, operations management, operations research and organizational behavior and theory. U.S. News & World Report ranked the Tepper School 29th in the economics field. The same magazine ranked Carnegie Mellon University 17th in the psychology field. The university's department of psychology within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences offers Ph.D. programs in cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology and social, personality and health psychology.
