Fully Funded PhD Scholarships

In the midst of educational budget cuts and rising tuition fees across the country, for individuals looking to puruse Ph.D. programs, there are several scholarships that provide fellowships and living stipends. Prospective students committed to pursuing a doctoral program have several options that can make graduate school an affordable endeavor.
  1. Brown University

    • Brown University's Department of American Civilization is an interdisciplinary program that prepares Ph.D. candidates for positions as college faculty, academic researchers and scholars, and executives in cultural institutions. Each student's doctoral program is designed to fit their own research topic and studies. Topics are as diverse as Asian American and Latino culture and politics to transnational popular culture. Every student admitted to the Ph.D. program in American Civilization is provided with five years of tuition, a living stipend, health fees and insurance, and three years of summer support. The first and fifth years of the program are usually fellowship years---other semesters require teaching and research assistantships.

    Princeton University

    • Princeton University offers a Ph.D. program in Politics with focuses on American politics, comparative politics, formal and quantitative analysis, international relations, political economy, political theory and public law. The university's political science faculty is among the largest in the nation and there are many opportunities for field work and conference travel. The Woodrow Wilson School offers graduate level courses in politics and public policy which are available to Ph.D. candidates as well. Every student admitted to the program receives a fellowship that includes five years of tuition, all fees and a living stipend. Some students seek additional funding from paid research assistantships, student teaching or additional fellowships. Travel to academic conferences is also covered through the graduate school.

    Columbia University

    • Columbia University offers full funding to most first year and all ongoing students in the Ph.D. program in French. The university has a rigorous and extremely competitive admissions process for the program, which accepts international students and steers all doctoral candidates towards careers in scholarship. Applications must demonstrate a high degree of proficiency in the reading, writing and speaking of French and English. The graduate fellowships include expectations of teaching and research apprenticeship. According to the Columbia website, the Ph.D. program in French is consistently ranked among the top five programs in national surveys. The university's Maison Francaise, a comprehensive French cultural center, is the oldest organization of its type on an American college campus.
