Retirement age under UGC Pay Scales

The retirement age under the University Grants Commission (UGC) Pay Scales is 65 years for all teaching and non-teaching staff of Central Universities, State Universities, and Deemed-to-be Universities. However, there are certain exceptions to this rule:

* Professors: Professors who are promoted to the rank of Emeritus Professor may continue to work beyond the age of 65 on a contract basis.

* Scientists: Scientists who are engaged in research projects funded by the Government of India or other recognized funding agencies may also continue to work beyond the age of 65 on a contract basis.

* Technical staff: Technical staff who are required to continue working for the smooth functioning of the university may also be allowed to continue beyond the age of 65 on a contract basis.

The decision to grant an extension of service beyond the age of 65 is taken by the university administration in consultation with the UGC. The extension is usually granted for a period of one year at a time, and it can be renewed for a maximum of three years.
