Student Finance Special Support Grants

In England, most college students are awarded a Maintenance Grant, based on their family income, to cover basic living costs. Students who can claim a means-tested benefit, such as a housing or income benefit, may apply for a Special Support Grant. If you receive a Special Support Grant, you may not also receive a Maintenance Grant. But unlike a Maintenance Grant, a Special Support Grant will not affect the amount of Maintenance Loan you are entitled to receive.
  1. Single Parent

    • You may be eligible for a Special Support Grant if you are a single parent or if your partner is also a student and one or both of you is responsible for caring for a child younger than 20 who is still in school full time.

    Disabled or Deaf

    • Special Support Grants are available to students with disabilities who qualify for the disability premium or severe disability premium. Deaf students who qualify for Disabled Students' Allowances are also eligible for Special Support Grants.

    International Student

    • International students may be eligible for a Special Support Grant, if they are entitled to an Income Support Urgent Cases Payment because they are temporarily without funds for up to six weeks.

    Illness or Family Care Leave

    • If you have taken time off from a course due to illness or caregiver responsibilities and are now ready to return to class, you may be eligible for a Special Support Grant.
