Federal Tuition Assistance in the Army

The federal Tuition Assistance (TA) program provides financial assistance for voluntary off-duty education programs to members of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. Eligible Army members have up to 100 percent of their tuition expenses paid to further their education.
  1. Eligibility

    • The federal TA program is available to Army soldiers who are regular active and reserve soldiers. All members of the Active Guard Reserve and Reserve Component Soldiers--activated under U.S. Code Title 10 or Title 32--and officers, warrant officers and enlisted personnel qualify for the program, according to the GoArmyEd website. All requests for TA should be submitted through GoArmyEd.

    Covered Courses

    • Federal tuition assistance covers many aspects of a soldier's education or personal career development. TA assistance will allow a soldier to complete a degree program, obtain a high school diploma or complete necessary certificate programs. Applicants completing course work beyond a master's degree aren't authorized to receive TA, according to the website GoArmy Ed.

    Application Process

    • The Army's online application process is the first step toward applying for the federal TA. The soldier must register online through GoArmyEd before the course's start date. TA is determined on a course-by-course basis. GoArmyEd will notify the soldier if the TA is approved. If it's not approved, GoArmyEd will provide a reason and next steps, according to the website Military: Army Tuition Assistance.
