How to Qualify for a Student Grant

Grants are offered to students that show a need for financial assistance for college. A student grant is not the same thing as a research grant; student grants are a sum of money given to students to help alleviate the high cost of college tuition, fees and other expenses related to a secondary education. The federal government determines who qualifies for financial grants once students complete and file the free application for federal student aid. Your financial situation determines whether or not you qualify for grants but the government will not issue grants to students that do not file the FAFSA.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a FAFSA application from your college financial aid office or fill out the application online at fafsa.ed.gov.

    • 2

Answer all of the questions asked on the FAFSA and provide all of the required information. Personal information includes your name, date of birth, address, Social Security Number, sex, marital status and dependent information and birth dates.

    • 3

Enter your financial information from your most recently filed income tax return; you must know your adjusted gross income and your tax liability. In addition you must provide your employment information and whether or not you intend to register as a full time student.

    • 4

Enter the name of your school and/or the school code. There is a list of all schools in your state on the online FAFSA application or you can obtain the school code by calling your college and asking an employee in the admissions office.

    • 5

Submit or mail your FAFSA to the federal government at the address listed on the paper application or by clicking the "Submit" button online. Once the government reviews your FAFSA, the amount and types of student grants you qualify for are determined.
