How to Qualify for a Cal Grant

One of the ways to help pay for college in California is to qualify for a Cal Grant. Cal grants are provided by the State of California for students to attend college. Up to $9700 per year can be awarded to students entering a California college, university or technical school. The best part is there is no obligation to repay this type of grant. This article will help you to understand if you qualify for a Cal Grant.

      Gather the following documentation:

      a. Proof of registration of selective service (Male)
      b. Social security card
      c. Copy of your recent tax return. If you live with your parent or others who support you, you will need to know their income.
      d. A list of other tangible assets such as IRA's, real estate, etc. for you and your supporting family.

      Review the follow list of general requirements to qualify for a Cal Grant:

      a. You were a California resident when you graduated from high school
      b. You have financial need based on your education costs
      c. Do not owe a refund on a state or federal grant or are in default of a education loan
      d. You will be attending a qualified California College, technical school, or University
      e. You are a U.S. citizen or qualified non-citizen
      f. Register with selective services (Male only)
      g. Will be enrolled at least half time
      h. You meet minimum GPA requirements
      GPA for Cal Grant B is 2.0 or better
      GPA for Cal Grant A is 3.0 or better
      GPA for Cal Grant C is 2.4 or better

      Check to see if your family income and assets are not above the threshold:

      The thresholds are listed by family size. The first amount is to qualify for a Cal Grant A, the second amount is qualify for a Cal Grant C or B. Your family income must be below these amounts:

      Six or more $92,100 $50,600
      Five $85,400 $46,900
      Four $79,700 $41,900
      Three $73,300 $37,700
      Two $71,600 $33,400

      For independent students the maximum thresholds would be:

      Single, no dependents $29,200 $29,200
      Married, no other dependents $33,400 $33,400

      Complete the GPA verification form.

      Complete the top portion of the GPA verification form. For the section labeled "For School Use Only", only an authorized high school or college official may complete and sign this section of the form. You grade point average will be an unweighted average. The Cal Grant program can accept the GPA verification form from high schools with full accreditation any high school that has Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), or another regional accrediting agency if not in the WASC region, or those schools that have a University of California-approved course list. Non-accredited school or students who were home schooled will need to provide a GED or a copy of their SAT or ACT scores along with the form. If you are submitting your SAT or ACT score, include a photocopy of the official test score.

      Prepare to apply during the correct timing. To qualify you will need to be at one of the following points as a student:

      a. Apply within one year of graduation
      b. Apply as a high school senior
      c. Apply within one year of getting your GED
      d. Apply as a community college transfer student if you are under 28.

      Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To be eligible for a Cal Grant this application is absolutely required. The application can be filed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

      To qualify, submit the application to the California Student Aid Commission no later than March 2. If you are attending a California Community College, submit the application no later than September 2 to qualify for a Cal Grant.
