How to Activate a Navy College Fund

According to the Bureau of Naval Personnel, the Navy College Fund is offered as an incentive or signing bonus to certain qualified individuals. Naval recruits who meet certain standards like Armed Forces Qualifying Test scores of 50 or higher, non-prior service members and those enrolled in the 12-month Montgomery G.I. Bill may be eligible to receive the Navy College Fund. The Navy College Fund is money given to naval recruits to use for higher education costs in addition to the Montgomery G.I. Bill.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to your naval education office. Each military installation has an education office with two to five colleges represented inside. If the college you want to attend does not have an office location in your education office, visit the college.

    • 2

Speak with the school's Naval representative at your education office or with the college's Veteran's Affairs representative. The Navy College Fund works with the GI Bill, and you may be required to activate and use both at the same time. Some schools ask you to use one at a time; verify with the school's financial aid department.

    • 3

Apply for your benefits at the education office or online. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs lets military members file for benefits like the Navy College Fund and the GI Bill online.

    • 4

Verify your application was received; the education office can print a copy of the forms for your records. If you apply for benefits online, you will receive a confirmation email.

    • 5

Wait for the processing of your application; the time varies by the chosen method. Once you receive confirmation of approval, the information is sent to your home college. Typically, military education benefits are paid in monthly installments during the course of each semester.
