How to File a Corrected FAFSA

Putting the wrong information on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can be a costly mistake. Fortunately there are easy ways to correct errors you make when applying for federal education funding. You can submit corrections to your application both online and by mail. The colleges listed on your original application will get your updated information in three to five days. You can also use the corrections process to add schools to your application.

Instructions

  1. Online Corrections

    • 1

Go to the Federal Student Aid website and click on the "Start Here" button.

    • 2

Enter your name, Social Security number and date of birth. Click the "Next" button.

    • 3

Select "Make Corrections to a Processed FAFSA."

    • 4

Enter your Federal Student Aid PIN to view your information. You should already have a PIN if you filed your original FAFSA online. If you filed your original FAFSA by mail, you should have received your PIN in an email or in a letter. If you do not have your PIN, go back to the Federal Student Aid home page, select "PIN Site" and follow the instructions to retrieve your PIN.

    • 5

Make the desired corrections to your information.

    • 6

Sign the application using your PIN. If the parent's information has changed, the parent also must enter a PIN. You may choose instead to print, fill out and mail in a paper "Signature Page" within 10 days of filing your correction.

    • 7

      Submit the corrected FAFSA.

    Paper Corrections

    • 8

Obtain a paper copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR) if you do not already have one. You can request a copy by calling Federal Student Aid at (800) 433-3243.

    • 9

Make the corrections on the report.

    • 10

Sign the corrected SAR. A parent also should sign if the parent's information has changed.

    • 11

Mail the corrected SAR to the address on the report.
