Types of Education Grants

Paying for college can be difficult, and not everyone wants to take out student loans that will need to be paid back. But with grants, you apply for and are given money to pay for any type of education you may need--it doesn't necessarily have to be degree-based. You can often get grants for continuing education or workforce development.
  1. Women

    • Education grants for women can be obtained for continuing or college education. In some cases, they are need-based, and you will need to prove financial hardship or need; in other cases, the only requirement is that you are female and wish to advance yourself. The grants may require specific degree programs if you are pursuing a college degree.

    Minorities

    • The most well-known organization that provides grants for minorities is the United Negro College Fund, but it is not the only one. Grants are available for many different minorities, including Hispanics and Native Americans.

    Teaching

    • Grants for teaching are available in every state. In most cases, you will be required to teach for underprivileged school districts in order to qualify for the grant. If you do not fulfill the teaching requirement, you may be forced to repay the money, possibly with interest.

    Technology

    • Many organizations, including the Association for Computing Machinery, offer grants for students who are interested in receiving a degree in technology. You may also be able to receive grants from the school itself based on your degree choice.

    Single Parents

    • As a single parent, you may be eligible for free money for your college education or job training. These grants are often given to parents who are working towards a new career or who are going back to school after a divorce.

    Veterans

    • While the government provides some grant money to veterans through programs like the GI Bill, other education grants are available to veterans who wish to attend continuing education to begin their own business or continue their education beyond what the GI Bill can provide.

    Process

    • You will normally need to fill out paperwork and provide information about your income, savings and property. You may also need to procure letters of employment and recommendation from both personal and business contacts. Not all grants are need-based, but those that are will have further restrictions.
