College Grants for Women Married to Marines

Funding an education can be a challenge whether you are the spouse of an active-duty Marine or Marine Corps veteran. Fortunately, there is a wide variety of programs available through the federal and state government, as well as private organizations, designed to help you pay for college or vocational training and achieve your education goals.
  1. Marine Corps Programs

    • There are several programs providing financial assistance for higher education and vocational training specifically for spouses of Marine Corps service members. The largest of these is the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society Spouse Tuition Aid Program, which provides tuition assistance for all levels of higher education. You may qualify to receive up to $1,500 per year to complete an undergraduate program or vocational certificate program, or $1,750 per year for graduate programs. To qualify for STAP, your spouse must currently be stationed overseas.

The Vice Admiral E.P. Travers Scholarship and Loan Program also provides assistance for individuals whose spouses or parents are active-duty Marines. This program provides one thousand grants of $2,000 each year. In addition to grants, this program offers interest-free loans of up to $3,000. To qualify for this program, you must be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program.

    Military-Wide Programs

    • In addition to grants for Marine Corps spouses, you may also be eligible for grants assisting spouses across the military. The Department of Defense Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts program offers funding to spouses of active-duty servicemembers. The CAA program will pay for up to $3,000 in tuition and fees per year for up to two years for college courses or professional training programs. Funds for this program are only available at a limited number of military installations, and you may only use funds for training in certain professions (see below for a link to full lists).

The Department of Veterans Affairs also provides grants for education through the Dependents' Educational Assistance program to spouses of service members who have died, been forcibly held by a foreign power or been disabled as a result of service. This program provides varying amounts of money for college and on-the-job training or apprentice programs.

    State Programs and Scholarships

    • Most individual states also offer some kind of financial assistance to veterans or their dependents for higher education or professional training. You can find out about these by visiting your state's Department of Veterans Affairs website.

Also consider finding private scholarships for the spouses of current and former Marines. You find these by either visiting your local Veterans Affairs office or conducting a search through Military.com's online database.
