National Honor Society College Scholarships

The National Honor Society, founded in 1921, recognizes outstanding high school juniors and seniors in four categories: scholarship, service, leadership and character. Students chosen for induction into the NHS demonstrate a well-rounded life that encompasses all four of these categories. Members of the NHS are eligible to be nominated for two different college scholarships and can apply for one community-service award.
  1. The National Honor Society Scholarship

    • The National Honor Society Scholarship is available to all NHS members in good standing with their affiliated NHS chapter. Members must be nominated through their chapter by a teacher or principal. Nominees must demonstrate outstanding performance in all four of the NHS precepts. There are four award levels, beginning with $1,000 at the state level and culminating with $10,000 to one National winner.

    NASSP/Herff Jones Principal's Leadership Award

    • The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) is the governing body of the National Honor Society and is the co-sponsor, along with Herff Jones, of this award. Candidates must be in their senior year of high school and nominated by their principal or assistant principal. Only one nominated senior per school, per year is permitted. Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $12,000 are awarded to just 100 outstanding nominees.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Award

    • The NASSP partners with Prudential Financial to give this award, which is based solely on community service. Candidates may apply for the award themselves or be nominated by someone else. They do not have to be a member of the NHS. The award is available to students in grades 5 to 12 who are U.S. citizens and have engaged in some type of volunteer service within the 12 months preceding their nomination. Completed applications must be submitted through the candidate's school principal or the head of an officially designated organization. State award winners will receive an engraved silver medallion, an all-expense paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C., for the award banquet, and $1,000 cash. National winners will receive a gold medallion, an additional $5,000 cash, a crystal trophy for the sponsoring school or organization and a $5,000 grant for a nonprofit organization of the recipient's choice.
