The American Fire Sprinkler Association gives away $25,000 in college scholarships annually in a unique essay contest that doesn't even require contestants to write an essay.
Instead, students in high school, or those wishing to go back to college, read the "Fire Sprinkler Essay" published on the web site at afsascholarship.org. After a thorough reading of the document about fire safety and sprinkler history, the contestants take a multiple-choice test in which they receive an entry for each correct answer. Ten prizes of $2,000 each are given away to the high school competitors and are paid directly to the institution of the student's choosing. The second chance contest gives away five scholarships of $1,000 each.
