Hospitality Management Program Course Requirements

Hospitality management programs prepare students interested in pursuing a career in tourism, hotels or restaurants for entry into the hospitality industry. Schools across the United States have different course requirements for hospitality management programs, and students are required to take a variety of courses depending upon the degree program they enroll in and school they attend.
  1. Atlantic Cape Community College

    • Atlantic Cape Community College has a hospitality management program that prepares students for entry-level positions in hospitality management. Completion of this program leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree and requires an 135-hour internship in a hospitality organization in the final semester. Outside of the general core classes, students will be required to take courses on orientation to hospitality and tourism, hospitality sales and marketing, human resources management and principles of management. Students will also take classes such as catering and events planning, restaurant operations and hotel operations.

    Cornell University

    • Cornell University offers a Master of Management in Hospitality program that lasts for three semesters over the course of 12 months. Students who are enrolled in this program have the option of spending the entire 12 months in Ithaca, New York, or they can spend only six months in Ithaca and the other six months in Singapore. Students' required courses include: operations management, marketing management for services, leadership development and professional development. Students will also take courses such as managerial communication, human resources management and hospitality strategy.

    University of California Irvine

    • The University of California at Irvine offers a Certificate of Completion program for spa and hospitality management. This program is conducted completely online and offers training in the latest spa marketing and business trends. Students will cover topics like business planning and operations, human resources, customer relations and legal issues. Students are required to take a total of seven courses, five of which are required and two electives. The required courses include: introduction to the spa industry, services and treatments, introduction to the spa and hospitality operations, spa industry finance, spa marketing and branding and human resources basics, recruitment and retention. Students have a choice between electives, including spa retail management, customer engagement management in spa industry and building and sustaining high quality systems for spas.
