Veterinary Technician Schools in Alberta

Veterinary technicians, also called animal health technologists, perform duties such as administering medication, preparing animals for surgery and dental cleaning. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association requires that veterinary technicians have a two-year diploma from an accredited school. Additionally, all Alberta veterinary technicians must be a member of the Alberta Association of Animal Health Technologists (AAAHT). To become a member, veterinary technologists must be a graduate of an accredited program and pass the AAAHT exam.

    • Grande Prairie Regional College is located in Grande Prairie, Alberta and offers a two-year diploma in Animal Health Technology at their Fairview campus. The program is 66 weeks long and includes a internship of six weeks. Students will study diagnostic imaging, pharmacology, surgical assistance and client relations. The Animal Health Technology program is accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and graduates will be eligible to write the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE). Program prerequisites include a high school diploma, verification of at least 80 hours of animal care experience as well as chemistry 30, biology 30, math 30, and English 30 or 33.

    Lakeland College

    • Located in Lloydminster, Alberta, Lakeland College offers a two-year diploma in animal health technology and the program is accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA.) Courses include anatomy, animal handling, physiology and animal handling. Program prerequisites include a high school diploma, English 30, biology 30 and chemistry 30, pure math 20 and pure math 30. Applicants must also have a minimum of 80 hours work experience in a veterinarian clinic.

    Northern Alberta Insititute of Technology

    • Located in Edmonton, Alberta, the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology has a two-year diploma program in animal health technology. The program is accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and holds a Good Animal Practice Certificate with the Canadian Council on Animal Care. Additionally, the on campus animal clinic is certified by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association Practice Inspection Program. Students will learn about animal diseases, anesthesiology, parasitology and small animal nutrition. Entrance requirements include official school transcripts, 80 hours of animal health work experience, English 30 or 33, math 30-1 or 30-2, chemistry 30 and biology 30. Although not required, the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology recommends students obtain a high school diploma as some employers require it.
