Early Childhood Special Education Graduate Programs

A graduate program in early childhood special education will prepare students to become early interventionists or early childhood educators who work with children who have special needs. These types of programs are available at a graduate level.

    • The University of Alaska in Anchorage has a Master of Education degree program in early childhood special education for people who are already early childhood special educators and early interventionists as well as those who wish to pursue a career in those areas. Students in this early childhood special education program will take courses that include issues in early childhood special education; autism: communication and social disorders; strategies: early childhood special education; families: developing parent-professional partnerships; and fundamentals of research in education.

    The University of Texas at Austin

    • The University of Texas at Austin has a master's degree program in early childhood special education that is designed for early childhood, elementary and kindergarten teachers as well as early intervention specialists. Students can choose to either pursue a Master of Arts degree or a Master of Education; the former is research-oriented while the latter is focused on application. Students will take early childhood special education courses that include overview of early childhood special education; communication intervention; family support and intervention; functional early motor and vision assessment and intervention; and challenging behavior.

    Vanderbilt Peabody College

    • Vanderbilt Peabody College offers a Master of Education degree in special education with a concentration in early childhood. This program teaches students how to help children and their families with delays in development whether it is cognitive, social, communication, motor skills or adaptive behavior. Coursest include psychological foundations of education, education and psychology of exceptional learners; speech and language for exceptional learners; procedures for early intervention for infants with disabilities; and advanced trends and issues in early childhood special education.
