Tax Preparer Programs

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 90,000 tax professionals prepared personal and business returns in 2008, and 63,000 tax preparers earned annual wages of $35,520. O*Net Online lists tax preparer's duties as review of financial records, preparation of tax returns using tax law and interviewing clients. Income tax preparer programs provide classes in federal and state income tax law, form completion and professional standards. Some states, such as Oregon and California, required completion of tax preparation courses, certification or licensing.

    • Ashworth College's online Tax Preparation course contains 12 lessons. Students are provided with lesson books, study guides and other course materials. Lessons include Opportunities in Tax Preparation, Partnership Taxation, Itemized and Other Deductions, and Credits and Special Taxes. Tuition assistance is available and the program has no admission requirements.

    North Seattle Community College

    • The tax preparation program prepares students for employment in accounting firms and tax preparation chains. The campus-based program consists of three courses of five credits each. Students learn individual income tax law and procedures. The program is designed to be completed in three quarter semesters. The college also offers a 35-credit Tax Preparation Advanced Certificate.

    Chemeketa Community College

    • The state of Oregon requires completion of an 80-course for licensing as a tax preparer. Chemeketa's online program includes Income Accounting I and II, which are 40-hour, 3-credit classes that are transferable. The required prerequisites, two financial accounting classes and two basic accounting courses, may be waived for students with professional experience in accounting or tax preparation businesses. Chemeketa's tax preparation course is approved by Oregon's Board of Tax Practitioners.

    National Tax Training School

    • The California Tax Preparer Course is an online program that provides classes in federal, state and California taxes. The course includes lessons in more than 13 areas, including capital gains and losses, itemized deductions and medical expenses. California tax preparers are required to register and meet educational requirements. The California Tax Preparer Course is approved by the California Tax Education Council.

    The Income Tax School

    • The Comprehensive Income Tax Course, an online tax preparation program, requires completion of 20 lessons in a minimum of eight months. Courses, which are taught by tax professionals, include Income Tax Forms, Exemptions and Dependents, Tax Credits and Itemized Deductions. The school provides the course manual and there are no requirements for admission.
