Students attending the Harvard School of Dental Medicine have the opportunity to earn both their Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree, as well as pursue continuing education options should they choose to specialize in a specific field. During the first two years of study, students learn the pre-clinical sciences required for clinical practice, including the neck and oral cavity, oral physiology, craniofacial genetics and craniofacial and neck anatomy. The remaining two years are spent learning in both the classroom and clinical settings, combining coursework with hands-on training under the supervision of a dental professional. Those interested in specializing in a dentistry field can choose between a number of fields, including endodontics, geriatric dentistry, implantology, orthodontics, prosthodontics and the PhD in Biological Sciences in Dental Medicine. As of 2010, prospective students can expect costs of $42,500 for the DMD program; costs for advanced studies will vary depending on program. Financial assistance is available.
