New Mexico Photography Schools

Although many companies employ photographers, including those in the scientific, commercial, journalism and fine arts industries, over 50 percent of photographers are self-employed, working either as freelancers or selling stock photographs through agencies or directly to consumers. Photography programs can give budding photographers a leg up in the highly competitive field. Many New Mexico art and design schools, universities and colleges have photography degree programs, but you may want to consider the following schools that have photography programs with particularly good reputations.

Located in Las Cruces, New Mexico, the college offers a wide variety of degrees. Enrollment was 7,803 in 2007-2008, with 4,452 students enrolled full-time. A plus is affordable tuition and fees with an in-state tuition of $1,226 during the 2008 to 2009 year. Distance learning, weekend study options and part-time classes are available. Programs of study include media, with an emphasis on animation, interactive tech, video graphics and special effects; digital communication and media/multimedia; and photographic and film/video technology/technician and assistant. Photography and commercial art is an alternative study program.

    The Art Center Design College-Albuquerque

    • For schools emphasizing part-time studies, consider The Art Center Design College-Albuquerque.

      For schools emphasizing part-time studies and a diverse student body, consider The Art Center Design College-Albuquerque, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Students can choose from a diverse selection of photography programs. In-state tuition is hefty--$26,765 during the 2008 to 2009-year--but the Student and Career Services Department offers academic and career counseling, along with job placement assistance. Programs of study include design, with an emphasis on design and visual communications; and fine arts and art studies. Media, with an emphasis on animation, interactive tech, video graphics and special effects; and photography and commercial art.

    New Mexico State Alamogordo

      If you're looking for lots of non-traditional older adult learners and a diverse student body, consider New Mexico State Alamogordo, or NMSU-A. Located in Alamogordo, New Mexico, NMSU-A enrolls more than 1,500 students annually, many of them concentrating in liberal arts. The school boasts affordable tuition, with in-state tuition at $1,226 during the 2008 to 2009 year. The school has open admission, as it accepts all qualified candidates. Distance learning is available, as are weekend study and part-time classes. Relevant programs of study include media with an emphasis on animation, interactive tech, video graphics and special effects; and photographic and film/video technology/technician and assistant. Alternatively, photography and commercial art has an emphasis on commercial and advertising art.

    College of Santa Fe

    • Consider College of Santa Fe for a residential college experience.

      For a residential campus experience with smaller class sizes and fellow students with high SAT scores, consider College of Santa Fe, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Compared to other universities, College of Santa Fe has many students who concentrate on art studies, photography, commercial art and fine arts. The school is expensive, with in-state tuition running $28,558 during the 2008 to 2009 year, but you get what you pay for with a good faculty-to-student ratio and a study abroad option. Related programs of study include photography and commercial art with an emphasis on film/cinema studies; intermedia/multimedia and photography.
