Air Force Academy Basic Cadet Training

A new cadet entering the U.S. Air Force Academy begins basic cadet training (BCT) on his first day. BCT occurs during a six-week period before actual classes begin for a freshman's first year.
  1. Phase One of BCT

    • Phase one of BCT focuses on military orientation, physical training and teamwork, and basic military skills. It takes place in the cadet area of the Air Force Academy, with upper-class cadets supervising the new cadets.

    Phase Two of BCT

    • Phase Two of BCT is held at Jacks Valley, an encampment five miles away from the cadet area, near Colorado Springs, Colorado. The second phase lasts 18 days and focuses on weapons training, field training and developing stamina.

    The Physical Demands of BCT

    • New cadets are tested for physical fitness during the third week of BCT. The tests include pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups and running. BCT is physically strenuous, with cadets pushed to their physical limits. Physical exercise includes a daily two-mile run, and many cadets develop tendinitis and blisters. New cadets are advised to be in top physical condition before they come to BCT.
