Building inspection training can be achieved by studying architecture, engineering or structural design at the university level. Other schooling can include community or junior college with courses in building or home inspection, construction technology, design and drafting or mathematics.
Different states apply legislation and certifications for building inspectors which should be considered when choosing a school. The National Association of Home Inspectors (NAHI) offers home and building inspection courses in various states, previous trade specific training will be an advantage. Specialized colleges and universities can be found online.
Building inspectors can be hired by federal and municipal authorities as well as the construction trade. They can also be self-employed. Building inspection has a very low unemployment rate nationwide with only 2 percent of employees out of work (as of 2008).
