To become a practicing orthodontic nurse, you must obtain a certificate to show that you completed a training program from an accredited school. This certificate is normally given through the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN), the most widely accepted awarding body in the UK.
As most orthodontic nurses begin their studies as dental nurses who wish to branch out into a new field, many are already registered with the General Dental Council (GDC). However, if you are not registered, you must do so before being granted a certificate in orthodontic nursing.
Dental nurses who undergo their training while still being employed part- or full-time must have the written permission of their employer to study. In addition, they must keep a record of the student's workplace activities to add to the record of experience that will be kept on file, along with test scores.
