How to Train Home Health Aides in New York

The Bureau of Labor predicts 50 percent growth in the number of Home Health Aides nationwide by 2018. The New York State Department of Health licenses Home Health Aide training programs within the state. There are currently 332 training facilities in the state. Licensed training programs must meet certain federal guidelines for the number of coursework hours and type of training offered.

Instructions

    • 1

Consult regulations for home health training programs. Home health aide training must total a minimum of 75 hours and include topics such as taking vital signs and patient safety. These requirements can be accessed in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 42, which is available online.

    • 2

Write a business plan with details regarding ownership structure, location and financial projections. Training programs must be delivered from approved locales; therefore, it is important to choose a site for the training. The business plan should clearly outline financial projections and give details on how the school will be owned (sole proprietorship, non-profit organization, for-profit company or partnership).

    • 3

Develop a curriculum and admission standards. Conform curriculum to the federal standards for home health aide training programs. Be certain to demonstrate how both classroom and practical training will be achieved.

    • 4

Complete the application for licensure as a proprietary school with the New York State Education Department. Among the steps for approval are the submission of a certificate of occupancy for the locale where training will be given and the submission of financial documents, including a 12-month projection of revenue and expenses. Currently, the fee for licensure is $250, and the process is explained online at the department's website.

    • 5

Submit a Home Health Aide Training Application to the New York State Department of Health. The application requests details regarding scheduled times for specific components of the curriculum as well as evaluation and test dates. The application is available online at the department's website.
