Arizona Colleges for Special Education

Special education typically involves teaching techniques designed specifically for those students from kindergarten through grade 12 whose learning needs surpass standard school curriculum. Special education teachers work with students who may have learning disabilities such as dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, developmental delays and emotional or behavioral issues.

    • The University of Arizona offers a bachelor of science degree in cross categorical special education, a bachelor of science degree in special education and rehabilitation, a master of arts degree in special education and a doctorate in special education. The special education programs are taught by professors of various specializations.The general bachelor program in special education teaches foundational knowledge and skills to work those with disabilities. Its master's degree program enables students to earn an Arizona teaching certificate within that degree while learning the principles of special education. It also offers a master's degree in early childhood special education. Its doctoral program consists of individual studies, including an internship with an aim to work in research, higher education and administration.

    Pima Community College

    • Pima Community College in Tucson offers a special education cross-categorical kindergarten through grade 12 program and a learning disabilities K-12 certification program. Some of the courses in these programs can be completed online. You must have earned a bachelor's degree to be enrolled in either of these special education programs. This certificate will advance your career as a special education or learning disabilities teacher, or you could continue academically with post-graduate courses.

    Prescott College Special Education Programs

    • Prescott College students may complete a bachelor of arts degree in early childhood special education, special education in mental retardation, learning disabled or serious emotional disability within the Adult Degree Program. Students in the adult degree program enables students to study for their degree or certification from home. The Resident Degree Program requires students to live and study in Prescott.

    Northern Arizona University Rural Special Education Program

    • Northern Arizona University offers a rural special education program. This program has funding through the Department of Education and provides books, housing and in-state tuition to students. Only 10 pre-service special education students are approved each fall to work with Native American children as well as their families in Kayenta at the Navajo Indian Reservation. The program consists of classes and total immersion in the Navajo culture. Once two semesters have been successfully completed, the students return to campus to focus on elementary coursework or student teaching.
