Distance Learning From Marine Universities

The Marine Corps University was established in 1989 but has been in operation in one form or another since 1891 in Quantico, Virginia. It teaches Marine officers a wide variety of subjects. Officers that cannot go to the school itself have the option of attending the distance learning program.
  1. Definition

    • Distance learning is an option that lets college-bound Marine officers study while being away from the Marine Corps University. They can take online courses to learn the same things their fellow students are learning at the university. Homework is posted online by professors and can be downloaded and printed by students. Tests are done entirely online, including taking the exam and grading it. Distance learning programs are considered just as legitimate as in-class learning programs and can lead to the same degrees. The distance learning system is nationally accredited.

    Prospective Students

    • A wide variety of students can enroll in the distance learning program. Students that have gone on active duty and deployed to remote areas around the world make up the bulk of the students in distance learning. Students that have jobs during the day or family commitments may also enroll. Single mothers or single fathers can earn their degree while staying at home and taking care of their children. Anybody who cannot make it to the classroom on a regular basis is eligible for distance learning. The tuition and requirements for attending are the same as non-distance learning.

    Delivery Systems

    • E-mail is a major component of distance learning. Professors e-mail their students updates, class times, personal notes and any other communication they need to deliver. However, lectures are sometimes given using telecommunication methods. Teletechnet is a satellite system created in 1994 that gives students a chance to receive real-time lectures from their professors on their computers. They can interact with their professors via their own camera and microphone system. Forums are created on the distance-learning websites to give students a chance to discuss class subjects together. Real-time chats can also be set up involving the entire class and the professor, or simply one student and the professor.

    Degrees Offered

    • Associate, Bachelor and Master degrees are obtainable through distance learning. Degrees are similar to non-military degrees. The Marine Corps University offers English, Math, Biology and World History degrees. They also offer many degrees that are military-based. Logistics is offered, which is the planning and execution of military operations. Strategic Studies is another degree available. This degree focuses on military strategy, including troop placements and the use of technology. Operational Studies focuses on wider ranging military strategies, such as working entire military theaters instead of single battles.
