Special Education Colleges in Massachusetts

Teaching programs in special education prepare aspiring teachers to work with a select group of students with exceptional educational needs. Massachusetts is home to five public universities, nine state colleges, 15 community colleges and more than 60 independent colleges and universities. Many of these institutions offer programs in special education. Students have opportunities for undergraduate or graduate study at private or public institutions across the state.

    • Boston University, known at BU, is a not-for-profit, private university located within the city of Boston, Massachusetts. It is the largest of the Massachusetts educational institutions offering a program in special education. The School of Education at BU serves more than 400 students through its 10 undergraduate and graduate programs. The special education program is offered as an undergraduate program and prepares students for careers as teachers and residential care support personnel who work with individuals with disabilities. Graduates earn a Bachelor of Science in Education and are eligible for state licensing to teach children with moderate to severe disabilities.

    Northeastern University

    • Northeastern University is another not-for-profit, private university located in Boston. Northeastern's College of Professional Studies offers a graduate program in special education that is endorsed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Graduates are eligible for licensure to teach students with moderate disabilities. The program leads to a Master of Education degree. Northeastern's program is also available online.

    Bridgewater State College

    • Located in Bridgewater, south of Boston, Bridgewater State College is a four-year public state college. The school's Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders, housed within the School of Education and Allied Studies, offers a special education Bachelor of Science in Education and a five-year dual degree program leading to a Master of Education in Special Education. Both programs meet all Massachusetts Department of Education licensure requirements to teach students with moderate to severe disabilities. The department also offers an optional concentration in communication disorders.

    Salem State College

    • Salem State College, as its name implies, is a public state college located in Salem, Massachusetts. The special education program is offered at the graduate level, culminating in a Master of Education in Special Education. Graduates are eligible for state licensure to teach students with mild to moderate disabilities. The program is offered through Salem's School of Graduate Studies.

    Fitchburg State College

    • The Education Department at Fitchburg State College, a public college located in north central Massachusetts, offers programs in early childhood, elementary, middle school and special education. Three special education programs are offered that focus on mild to severe disabilities at various grade levels. The programs prepare graduates for licensure to teach in this area. Six special education graduate programs are also offered, including a licensure program for reading specialists in special education. Undergraduate programs lead to a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. Graduate programs lead to a Master of Education degree.

    Lesley University

    • Lesley University, located in Cambridge, is a private, not-for-profit school. The Undergraduate College offers several programs in education, including a special education program leading to initial licensure to teach students with moderate disabilities. Several graduate programs in special education, which lead to a Master of Education degree, are also offered through the graduate School of Education. The school also offers an advanced professional certificate in autism spectrum disorders.

    • Westfield State College, founded by Horace Mann, is a public state school located in western Massachusetts. The Education Department offers several programs at the undergraduate level, including a special education program preparing students for licensure to teach students with moderate disabilities at various grade levels.
