How to Petition for an Associate's Degree

The associate's degree is an undergraduate degree awarded to a student after a two-year course of study. For continuing students, an associate's is a foundational degree usually received before a bachelor's degree. An associate's degree is awarded in a number of academic fields including fine arts, science, teaching, business administration or industrial technology.

      Schedule a meeting with your counselor or academic adviser.

      Review your transcript with your adviser and ensure that you have completed all objectives required to receive an associate's degree. Generally, 60 credits or units in your designated area of study must be completed with a letter grade of C or better.

      Fill out a petition form for an associate's degree (see Resources for a sample).

      Submit the form to your registrar's office before the term deadline. Deadlines for application submission can be found within your school's course catalog.

      Apply for a commencement ceremony, if desired. If you wish to walk across the stage with your graduating class, also pick up the necessary paperwork from your registrar's office. Fill out and submit the paperwork with your petition form.
