How to Get an Associate's Degree in Journalism

If you are interested in pursuing a career as a newspaper, radio or television reporter, a news researcher or news columnist, one credential that will move you further on that career path is an associate of arts degree in journalism. Journalism associate degree programs will provide the basic skills and information you need to pursue entry-level positions in newspaper, magazine, television and radio broadcasting companies. You also can often transfer your credits to a four-year bachelor's degree program. Be aware that most journalism employers will look more highly on candidates with bachelor's degrees. Associate degrees are offered by several types of institutions (online colleges, community colleges, technical colleges, junior colleges, universities and home-study programs through the mail). An associate's degree typically requires at least 60 hours of credits and 18 to 24 months to complete. Although each institution has its own requirements, the process is generally the same for all.
