The James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts at Wayne State University in Detroit has two undergraduate degrees in fashion design and merchandising. Both the bachelor of arts and the bachelor of science "provide students the opportunity to combine a fine arts education with technical preparation in the professional fields of apparel design or fashion merchandising," according to the university.The option in fashion merchandising develops insight and realistic skills related to the wholesale purchasing and retail marketing of fashion merchandise.
The Environmental, Design and Building Technologies Department of Lansing Community College offers an associate's degree and two certificates in apparel merchandising and design technology. The associate in applied science degree requires a minimum of 64 credit hours and can lead to an entry level position or the opportunity to transfer to a four-year college.The certificate of achievement requires 37 credit hours. The certificate of completion requires 18 credit hours. Each option requires courses in apparel and textiles sketching, career development, introduction to the apparel industry and apparel construction.
Both an associate in business studies and a certificate in merchandising management are available from Delta College in University Center, Michigan. The associate's degree is comprised of 62 to 67 credit hours; the certificate requires 30 credit hours. Both require classes in advertising, sales, merchandising and merchandising display, textiles, marketing, retailing, buying for resale and applied marketing.
The International Academy of Design & Technology -- Detroit in Troy offers a bachelor of fine arts degree in fashion design and merchandising. It requires classes in visual merchandising, management, pricing strategies, salesmanship, entrepreneurship, fashion sketching, clothing construction, textile design, drafting, draping and production and fashion publicity and promotion.
