The College of Arts and Humanities at Southern University houses several different fields of study, including English and the visual and performing arts. The foreign language department offers a bachelor of arts degree in French or Spanish, with elective classes in Chinese and German. A bachelor of arts in history also falls under the reign of the arts and humanities college. A student pursuing her degree in history will begin her course of study in a board range of classes, not excluding mathematics. The art of communication is not neglected at Southern. The college offers a degree in mass communication and speech communications. Theater arts is lumped into a department with speech communications, but each subject awards a separate degree. Master of arts degrees are offered in the communications field; defined as mass communications, which combines broadcasting and journalism. Social sciences also provide a master's degree with various concentrations, including political science.
The sciences cover a board range of fields, including mathematics and psychology. All science degrees, no matter the track of study, are bachelor of science degrees. Two bachelor's degrees stand out amongst the basic chemistry and physics offerings. Namely a bachelor of science in speech pathology and audiology or a degree in rehabilitation services. Both of these fields are expounded upon in the graduate school with a master's in speech pathology or rehabilitation counseling. Another interesting graduate studies track provides the student with a master's in urban forestry. Psychology is studied at the college of science, not with the medical students as the university's medical studies focuses on nursing.
The college of engineering, though awarding bachelor of science degrees, operates independently from the college of sciences. Engineering degrees are divided into mechanical, civil and electronics studies.
Degrees from the College of Business cover board areas such as finance, marketing and business economics. A specialized degree in electronic business gives a student training in the technical knowledge needed to operate a business using the World Wide Web. No graduate degrees are available in business. However, a student pursuing a degree in electronic business may choose to pursue his master's in computer science, another of Southern's offerings.
Southern's medical program is confined to the study of nursing. A nursing student can continue his studies all the way to the graduate level and receive a master's of science in nursing. Southern's focused training of nurses allows the student ample resources to practice patient care. For example, a portion of the training includes mandatory hours in a human simulation lab.
The School of Architecture offers a fully comprehensive course of study over a five-year period. The first four years include extensive studio classes under the careful instruction of the architecture faculty. The fifth year culminates in a thesis that will garner the student her bachelor of science in architecture.
