International Maritime Academy Executive Courses

The Emirates International Maritime Academy (EIMA) in Dubai is a gateway for full and part-time students entering into maritime industry careers. The EIMA draws students from all over the world, offering executive courses (short, practical, actionable education for working professionals) in five general areas as well as teaming with Newcastle University in Great Britain to offer graduates of maritime studies a Masters of Science. All courses are taught in English.
  1. Maritime Security

    • Confrontation with pirates is addressed in ISPS training.

The growing threat of piracy in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden along with a demand for cruise line safety has has created high demand for EIMA's courses in Maritime Security. All courses follow policies of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. According to the International Maritime Organization, the code is to "provide a standardised, consistent framework for evaluating risk, enabling Governments to offset changes in threat with changes in vulnerability for ships and port facilities through determination of appropriate security levels and corresponding security measures." EIMA offers a one-day course on the basics as well as three multi-day courses for Port Security Officer, Ship Security Officer and Company Security Officer.

    Offshore

    • EIMA offers courses in the growing field of offshore drilling.

Beginning in 2010, EIMA offers 18 courses in the area of working aboard an offshore drilling platform. Although drilling is not a subject, many insurance companies are now requiring formal training in safety aboard rigs and EIMA has courses available from the basics of a rig pass to more advanced training in equipment operations, such as crane operations safety and at-sea rescue.

Standards of Training, Certification & Watchkeeping

    • The Standards of Training, Certification & Watchkeeping (STCW) were revised in 1995, requiring formal training for mariners to receive a STCW 95 Compliant Certificate. The certificate shows mariners are training to internationally agreed upon specifications. The purpose is to set standards for all masters, officers and watch personnel for merchant ships. EIMA offers course training in Basic Safety Training, Elementary First Aid, Personal Survival Techniques, Crowd Management & Safety Training for Passengers Ships, Fire Fighting & Prevention and Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities. These courses help prepare the student for the STCW 95 Certificate examination.

    Recreational

    • A two-day course in the basics of recreational boating prepares students for licensing.

For those seeking licensing for operation of a recreational or pleasure craft, the EIMA offers a recreational course that awards a certificate upon completion. The two-day course promotes safe power-boating and trains the public and powered pleasure craft owners in safe handling of powered pleasure boats. The course will emphasize the theory and practical aspects of good seamanship and navigation.

Master of Science in Marine Technology

    • The EIMA has teamed with Newcastle University to develop a two-year MSc program in Marine Technology. The program is designed for working marine graduates with courses available on the weekends and via web-based study. The MSc consists of ten ten-credit taught modules and an 80-credit work-based project, and can be completed in just over two years. Modules are also available on a stand-alone basis as Continuing Professional Development. Each taught module requires approximately 100 hours of study time. The EIMA course is offered in Dubai, but students may also attend study in England and receive the same MSc from Newcastle University.
