How to Reprint Old Books That Are Out of Print

It can be challenging for educators to design relevant, engaging coursework for their students. It gets even more challenging when a book that has been part of the course for several years suddenly goes out of print. The factors are not always known. It can be from a limited number of published volumes, a waning popularity canceling reprint orders, or author rights changing parties. Whatever the reason, hope is not lost. It is possible to get reprints of out-of-print books. In fact, it's a business.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather all the bibliographical information for your book — author's name, book title, publisher and ISBN number.

    • 2

Choose an out-of-print book retailer online. There are dozens of companies that have partnerships with a variety of publishers. Find the one that works with the publisher you need. Check the Resource section for a comprehensive list of companies.

    • 3

Order your book. Some companies have limits to the number they can print, while others are only able to provide an electronic file. If you have access to the file you can print copies yourself, although you will be paying for the production costs.
